Faculty of Law (Civil Law)
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
The University of Ottawa’s Civil Law Section is recognized as a centre of excellence for teaching and research in law. It contributes to the vitality of the legal profession in Quebec, in Canada and around the world, and it offers an array of programs that seek to train legal professionals who can adapt to the evolution of legal practice in an increasing variety of fields and contexts. The licence en droit (LL.L.) program, offered entirely in French, prepares students for admission to the Quebec Bar and to the Chambre des notaires. The program offers students a wide range of elective courses, which allows them to personalize their education, particularly in the area of international law. It includes an applied learning component, which allows students to develop writing, advocacy, mediation and research skills in each year of their program, giving them a head start in the workplace.
Our co-operative education program allows students to add three 4-month internships to their curriculum, which optimally prepares them to practise law. Thanks to our strong international orientation, we have also developed a program that combines a licence en droit with a bachelor’s degree in international development and globalization.
Civil law graduates can also complete our national program, which provides them with training in common law during an additional year of study. This dual degree allows students to practise not only across Canada, but also worldwide. Students may also obtain both a civil law and a common law degree in three years through the Programme de droit canadien.
Finally, the Civil Law Section aims to offer a learning environment on a human scale that encourages interaction between professors and students. We hope that your time with us will be a milestone in your life!
