Faculty of Medicine
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
The Faculty of Medicine is founded on two fundamental pillars: education and research. Through the creation and dissemination of scientific knowledge and expertise, our researchers, clinicians and students work not only to address society’s growing health care needs in a wide range of biomedical areas, but also to improve services such as detection, prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Through these efforts, the Faculty is now recognized as a national and world leader in medical education and research and our students graduate with the skills and experience necessary to expertly address the health care needs of a global population.
Our highly-competitive, bilingual MD program is proud to serve Canada’s three founding cultures, Aboriginal, Francophone and Anglophone. Our Aboriginal Program recruits and supports Aboriginal students and increases the awareness of Aboriginal culture and health issues for all students. Our students rank among the top in Canada on both parts of the Medical Council of Canada’s licensing examinations and in the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) competitive process. More than 97 per cent of our graduates receive their first choice of postgraduate specialty discipline in the national match.
Through our affiliation with five local academic health science centres, one regional hospital and eight rural health centres, the Faculty provides opportunities to train with internationally renowned health experts in world class settings. Additionally, students and residents can train through a number of remote Canadian and international health care centres. Our recent partnership with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine will also provide staff and students with a number of exclusive opportunities in education and research.
The Postgraduate Medical Education program offers a unique bilingual teaching environment, with one of the largest foreign trainee populations in Canada. Over the last decade, we have increased our number of specialty programs from 40 to 67 and we now rank among the top three in Canada for our range of specialties. These programs all lead to certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
Our MSc and PhD programs are developing the world’s scientific leaders through our five MSc, PhD and MD/PhD programs. Our students and fellows partner with our esteemed academics to conduct groundbreaking research in neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases, regenerative medicine, emerging pathogens and infectious diseases, systems biology, growth and development, epidemiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, nutrition and metabolism, immunology, virology and bacteriology.
Our MD/PhD program offers exceptional students the opportunity to pursue two degrees over seven years. This program attracts the small number of students with the potential to grow into future leaders in the health sciences and allied fields. Based on a single, integrated curriculum, the program combines our existing undergraduate medical school curriculum with approved doctoral graduate programs.
The Faculty is fourth overall in Canada and 68th worldwide, as well as third in Canada for citations/papers and 54th worldwide for research impact, according to the QS World University Rankings of more than 800 universities. The Faculty has also contributed significantly to the following uOttawa milestones: second in Canada for research intensity according to Maclean’s magazine, second highest growth rate in Tri-Council funding (all programs) since 2003 and third highest growth rate in Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funding for universities with medical schools since 2003.
The Faculty offers you the chance to learn with state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. This includes the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre, the second largest of its kind in North America, which gives health care professionals the opportunity for hands-on training.
In summary, we are dedicated to delivering excellence in education and research while supporting our students, who are among the best and brightest.
Welcome!
