LAW LIBRARY
Faculty and students have at their disposal a specialized law
library which occupies the two top floors of Fauteux Hall.
The library serves both the Common Law Section and the Section
de droit civil and contains a rich collection of Canadian law, featuring
mainly Ontario and Quebec publications. The collection also includes basic
documentation (Statute and Case Law) from the United States, the United Kingdom
and France. The library also contains more and more legal materials related to
the European Community.
The law library boasts more than 200, 000 volumes and
subscribes to approximately 750 periodicals. The library offers all necessary
facilities for University-level studies and for research, including reference
services and a computer laboratory. Study, discussion and seminar rooms as well
as photocopy services are available. For further information with regard to
services offered, the organization of the collection and the rules and
regulations of the library, students are advised to attend the information
sessions at the beginning of the academic year.
In addition to access to other libraries of the University of
Ottawa, students who undertake specialized research can make arrangements to
use the library of the Supreme Court of Canada (the richest and most important
of law libraries in Canada), the library of the Department of Justice and the
Library of Canada as well as the libraries of other departments and
institutions of the federal government.
Human Rights Research and Education Centre
DIRECTOR: Errol Mendes
DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS: Robin Wentzell
LIBRARIAN: Alan Fleichman
FINANCIAL OFFICER: Nicole Hall
ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARY: Susan Lecorre
The Human Rights Research and Education Centre was established
at the Faculty of Law in 1981. The University of Ottawa was an ideal location
for the Centre as there are both civil law and common law faculties operating
in this fully bilingual university. The Ottawa location also allows for regular
contact with federal and provincial governments, other academic institutions
and non-governmental organizations involved in human rights.
The Centre has three goals: research, education, and the
promotion of human rights. In Canada the Centre focuses on social justice and
equality issues, including discrimination, employment equity, and corporate
codes of conduct. Internationally, the emphasis is on strengthening the work of
human rights institutions, good governance, democratic development and human
rights, including womens rights. There are projects in China, Thailand, Indonesia,
Brazil, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, India, and planned projects around the world.
The Centre has a human rights documentation centre, housing
some 16,000 books and documents on Canadian and international human rights
issues, including a comprehensive collection on the Canadian Charter of Rights
and Freedoms and constitutional law, and materials on social justice, equality
and international development issues. The documentation centre is fully
computerized and is open to students daily for on-site research and
consultations.
Centre for Trade Policy and Law
The Centre for Trade Policy and Law (CTPL), established in
1989, is jointly sponsored by the Norman Paterson School of International
Affairs at Carleton University and the Faculty of Law at the University of
Ottawa. CTPL was established to promote greater public understanding of trade
policy issues, to foster independent analysis and research of trade policy
issues, and to encourage the development of trade policy professionals. The
core of the Centres program includes a range of interrelated activities:
Teaching: Relying on increased resources dedicated to teaching
graduate and professional students at the two sponsoring universities and on
programs offered to public servants, business and labour organizations, CTPL
acts as a catalyst for the development of teaching programs at other Canadian
universities by working with faculty in developing teaching materials,
encouraging faculty exchanges and holding regular seminars on the teaching of
trade policy in Canada.
Seminars and Conferences: Aimed at wider audiences where
academics, government officials and private sector specialists can explore a
range of trade policy issues and stimulate greater public discussion of trade
policy issues.
Research and Publications: CTPL encourages both applied and
theoretical research in the area of trade policy by helping qualified scholars
obtain the necessary funds to carry out their research. Research also promoted
through the publication of reviewed monographs and conference proceedings as
well as the development of a resource centre to act as a central repository for
material on trade policy. CTPL promotes its national mandate by inviting
scholars from across Canada to participate in seminars, special lectureships, conferences
and research projects and stimulate an exchange of human resources between
academic, government, business and labour organizations.
Canadian Centre for Linguistic Rights
The Canadian Centre for Linguistic Rights was established at
the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa to centralize intellectual
dialogue and research efforts from across Canada and beyond, in order to avoid
duplication and to stimulate research that will advance the legal status of
linguistic rights. The Centres more specific mandate is to collect as much
national and international documentation as possible on linguistic rights, to
promote better knowledge of linguistic and cultural issues, to create a network
of resource persons in these fields, to facilitate contacts between these
people, to encourage research in linguistic law and to undertake activities to
make people aware of linguistic rights that could promote future interaction.
Its activities include the hosting of conferences and the publication of a
bulletin.
Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law
The Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law promotes
teaching and research in these areas. Drawing on the bilingual and bijuridical
strengths of the Faculty of Law, the Chair helps meet the needs of legal
practitioners arising from the public regulation of business and trade at the
national, bilateral and international levels.
Gordon F. Henderson Chair
The Gordon F. Henderson Chair was established in 1981 and is
dedicated to human rights research, teaching and promotion in Canada and
abroad.
The Gordon F. Henderson Chair in Human Rights plays a key role
in the Universitys efforts to support research and teaching on basic issues in
the field of human rights and to meet the needs of individuals, academics and
institutions in Canada as well as abroad.
