The Lees Campus is located at the extreme south end of the main campus, below the Queensway, next to the Rideau River. For many years, this land served as an industrial area with a rail line, which no longer exists today. After World War II, with industrial activity decreasing, the Ontario government expropriated part of the land in the 1950s to build Highway 417. In 1964, Algonquin College took possession of the land that hadn’t been expropriated. Then, in 2007, the University Ottawa bought the land and existing buildings from Algonquin College to make room for a number of administrative and academic units, including the Faculty of Health Sciences.
In 2012, through a partnership with the City of Ottawa, the University completed an $8 million athletic facility that houses a new playing field, used primarily by the University’s Gee-Gees football team. The new facility has a synthetic playing field with a seating capacity of more than 3,400. At the new site, the Gee-Gees have dedicated locker rooms, offices for coaching staff and a sports therapy clinic.
