Mandatory training
The following is part of the mandatory training required by law. All employees must complete this training during the first month of hire.
Violence Prevention
Employers have responsibilities regarding workplace violence. They must have workplace violence policies and programs and must provide information and instruction to workers on them.
Workers are also responsible for preventing workplace violence. They must report potential workplace violence. They also have the right to refuse to work if they are in danger of workplace violence.
Respect in the Workplace
Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to provide employees with training on prevention of harassment and discrimination in the workplace.

Additional mandatory training
Employment Equity Training Program
Members of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO) who take part in recruitment processes shall participate in the program of training on Employment Equity, as stipulated in section 17 of their collective agreement.
The program of training on Employment Equity includes a Guide for APUO Selection Committees, the Canada Research Chairs Bias in Peer Review training module and the synchronous training workshop on employment equity.
APUO members serving on peer review committees should participate in the above employment equity workshop, as stipulated in articles 14, 15 and 16 of the collective agreement.
Harassment and discrimination
The Human Rights Office offers learning and development sessions on harassment and discrimination for students, staff and professors on discrimination and harassment.
Teaching and Learning Support Service (TLSS)
There are free TLSS training activities for teaching staff. Some are for professors and some for teaching assistants. Conferences are open to all. Workshops cover various topics in postsecondary education, including a workshop on inclusive pedagogy.

External online training opportunities
Call It Out: Racism, Racial Discrimination and Human Rights
A 30-minute interactive online course that offers a foundation for learning about race, racial discrimination and human rights protection under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The course offers a historical overview of racism and racial discrimination, explains what “race,” “racism” and “racial discrimination” mean and provides approaches to preventing and addressing racial discrimination.
Canada Research Chairs Bias in Peer Review training module
This interactive module is designed to promote an understanding of unconscious bias and how it can affect the peer review process. It will also provide strategies for mitigating bias during the review process.
