Theft prevention
- Always lock your bike with two quality locks; use a U-lock and a cable lock.
- Using the U-lock, lock the frame of your bike to the bicycle rack and with a long cable lock “intertwine” the cable lock to the bike frame, wheels and bike rack.
- By using more than one style of lock, it will take thieves two types of tools and twice as much time to steal your bike.
- If possible, also remove the seat of your bike. Without a bike seat, thieves won’t be able to make a quick escape and ride away on your bike.
- Remove all quick release items and bring them with you.
- As proof of purchase in case of theft, save your receipt and serial number, also take a picture of your bike. If your bike is stolen and then recovered, the return process will be easier.
- Personalize your bike (with stickers, for example) so it’s less attractive to thieves.
- Keep an eye out for suspicious or unusual activity and report it to Protection Services at 141 Louis-Pasteur or by calling 613-562-5499.

- Never leave your bike unlocked or unattended, even for “just a minute”. It only takes a minute to steal a locked bike; unlocked bikes are irresistible to opportunistic thieves.
- Never lock your bike by the front wheel only. It will be too easy to steal.
- Always lock your bike to a bicycle rack and never to a pole, tree or railing as it will be easy to steal. Bikes not parked at a bicycle rack or bikes obstructing pedestrians and wheelchair accessibility are subject to removal at the owner’s expense.
- More than 92% of all bikes stolen on campus were locked with a cable or chain lock. Following our first recommendation (in the “Do this” column) will considerably increase your chances of keeping your bike.
