National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Sep 29, 2023 — 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
On September 30, Canadians from coast to coast will gather on the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Indigenous peoples. We will collectively acknowledge the tragic legacy of residential schools.
Details
Established in 2021, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation builds on Orange Shirt Day, which was created in 2013 to raise awareness about residential schools and their impact on Indigenous peoples and communities. It responds to a commitment made in the wake of the 94 Calls to Action in the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which called for the recognition of the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.
Please join us on Friday, September 29, 2023, in University Square at 9:30 a.m. to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The ceremony will be followed by a community feast.
A number of activities and events are scheduled across campus during the week. Feel free to enhance your online presence by using one of the virtual backgrounds provided on this resource page.
This week also marks the third anniversary of the death of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who died in hospital after suffering abuse from healthcare workers. The University of Ottawa joined other institutions and individuals in signing Joyce’s Principle and will honour her memory and the memory of all those who have lost their lives to discrimination and violence.
