The Erasmus+ Opportunity program allows support staff and professors to benefit from professional development in an international environment.

Erasmus+ at uOttawa

The University of Ottawa recognizes that administrative staff and professors play an important role in executing its Strategic Plan, and more specifically international initiatives concerning students. This is why we have launched the International Staff Mobility program, which will allow support staff and professors to benefit from professional development in an international environment.

Through these mobility opportunities, administrative staff and professors will be able to exchange best practices with our partners, as well as be completely immersed in a new culture. This will allow them to develop international competencies, and in particular:

  • understanding cultural nuances;
  • acquiring intercultural communication skills;
  • participate in international research and teaching activities (professors);
  • appreciating the value of a mobility exchange for uOttawa students;
  • bring back innovative ideas.

These newfound skills and knowledge will help these employees better serve an increasingly international campus community, promote mobility among our student body, and support us in strengthening our relationships with our international partners. This will contribute to the University reaching its internationalization objectives.

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is a program created by the European Union (EU) to promote education, training, youth and sport in Europe. In addition to other objectives, the program aims to promote cooperation with partner countries, such as Canada.

The University of Ottawa has been selected by a number of our European partners to participate in Erasmus+ (through Key Action 1: Mobility of Individuals for Higher Education and Training), giving uOttawa students, staff and professors the possibility to receive funding for mobility stays at these select partners.

The EU funding is aimed at covering travel costs as well as costs incurred during the stay, and it varies in relation to the length of the stay, the host country, and the distance between Canada and the host country, among other factors.

To learn more about Erasmus+ funding for the mobility of individuals, visit the EU’s website here.

Eligibility criteria vary according to the partner and agreement concerned; please consult the list of open calls below to view whether you are eligible for any opportunities.

How will this mobility stay help in your position at uOttawa? One obvious benefit is through the network I was able to establish.  As my role on campus involves developing language programs and courses for international students in programs at the University of Ottawa, this experience served as a potential starting point for developing partnerships to support international students through short-term programs.  Additionally, international student academic support and campus integration initiatives are central to the work done by my team.  Through this program, I was able to learn how METU and other participating universities integrate international students into their programs, giving me ideas on how we can support international students in my sector.  Finally, given the importance of staff mobility exchanges at the University of Ottawa coupled with the language training specialization of my sector, my office is committed to hosting professors through Erasmus.  Through this mobility experience, I am now in a better position to guide my sector in hosting future mobility exchanges.

Do you have any suggestions for future participants? "Employees who participate in Staff Mobility shouldn’t only stop at the schedule offered by the host institution. I strongly suggest doing research before leaving in order to identify people and services to visit in order to be able to seek out the specific knowledge they would like to acquire and which best practices they can share. For example, a professor could organize a meeting with another professor who specializes in the same field, or a support staff member could organize a meeting with a staff member at the host university who has a similar position."
