ESTABLISHMENT

The Strategic Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies was established by Senate resolution 2016-2017.043, adopted on February 28, 2017. Modifications approved by the Senate on January 17, 2022.

Status

The Strategic Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (the Committee) is a standing committee of the Senate.

Powers and functions

Under the authority of the Senate, the Committee is a catalyst for ideas, strategies, best practices and innovation regarding graduate and postdoctoral studies. Without limiting the scope of the foregoing, the Committee:

  • develops strategies and formulates recommendations to the Senate and to the Administrative Committee with respect to recruitment, admissions policies, retention, time to completion, student experience, integration of postdoctoral fellows, thesis supervision and all other matters related to graduate and postdoctoral studies;
  • advises and assists the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, on matters pertaining to his or her responsibilities; and
  • makes recommendations to the Senate concerning changes to the Committee’s terms of reference.

MEMBERSHIP

Members

The Committee is composed of the following members:

  • the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies;
  • the two Associate Vice-Provosts, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies;
  • the Vice Provost, Equity, Diversity and Inclusive Excellence;
  • one Associate Vice-President, Research, named by the Vice-President, Research;
  • one Associate Vice-President, International or Francophonie, named by the Vice-President, International and Francophonie;
  • the Associate Vice-President, Student Life;
  • the Vice-Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, or the equivalent, from each Faculty;
  • a representative of Saint-Paul University, named by Saint-Paul University for a three-year term, renewable;
  • one representative from the Library named by the University Librarian and Vice-Provost, Knowledge Systems for a three-year term, renewable;
  • two full-time graduate students, including at least one doctoral student, elected by the Senate for a two-year term, renewable, from candidates nominated by a nominating committee composed of the graduate student members of Senate and one Graduate Students’ Association’s executive member named by the association (who may also be candidates)
  • one postdoctoral fellow named by the Vice‐Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for a two‐year term, renewable; and
  • two regular full‐time professors elected by the Senate (one representing the humanities and one representing the sciences) for a three‐year term, renewable.

Chair

The Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, serves as Committee chair.

MEETINGS

Convening

The Committee meets at least four times a year, as convened by the Chair.

Quorum

Ten members of the Committee constitute a quorum.

Voting

All motions require a majority vote of members present.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Committee reports to the Senate through the Executive Committee of the Senate.
