WHEREAS section 15 of the University of Ottawa Act, 1965 (“the Act”), establishes the composition of the Senate;
AND WHEREAS the Senate can, pursuant to section 15 (1) of the Act, name by bylaw members in addition to those mentioned in sub-sections (a) to (g) of section 15 (1);
BE IT ENACTED as a bylaw of the Senate governing the composition of the Senate the following:
1. The following persons are members of the Senate of the University of Ottawa pursuant to sub-section (h) of section 15 (1) of the Act:
(a) One regular full-time professor for each faculty elected by its faculty council and one regular full-time academic member of the Library elected by the Council of the Library, subject to the following:
- (i) In the case of the Faculty of Law, which does not have a faculty council, the election of the professor is deemed to be in accordance with subsection (a) when the person elected by one section’s council is recognized by that of the other section. The Civil and Common Law sections must ensure that when the Senate member mentioned in subsection 15 (1) of the Act is from one section, the other section elects the member representing the Faculty of Law in the Senate.
- (ii) In faculties where at least one position of associate dean or vice-dean has been created, the faculty council may decide, under a bylaw duly approved by Senate, that a person holding such a position fill the place in the Senate that otherwise would be filled by the member elected under subsection 1 (a) of this policy.
Professors elected under this subsection serve in the Senate for a three-year term.
(b) Three part-time professors who are members of a faculty council, elected by and among part-time professors who are members of faculty councils. Members are elected for a one-year term. The election procedure is determined by a Senate resolution.
(c) One full-time undergraduate student elected by peers in each of the faculties, and one student representing the two sections of the Faculty of Law. The election procedure and term duration are determined by a Senate resolution.
(d) Two graduate students elected by their peers. The election procedure and term duration are determined by a Senate resolution.
(e) The vice-provosts
(f) The deputy provost
(g) The associate vice-president, student affairs
(h) The registrar
(i) The associate vice-presidents in the Office of the Vice-President, International and Francophonie
(j) The associate vice-presidents in the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation
(k) The deans of the Common Law and Civil Law sections
(l) The University librarian and dean of libraries
(m) The director, career development and experiential learning
(n) The director-general, Teaching and Learning Support Service
(o) The senior director, student health, wellness and support
(p) The director, University of Ottawa Professional Development Institute
