It is the time of the year where students from all faculties celebrate their achievements and receive their degree. It is also a time where uOttawa recognizes activists, visionaries and inspiring leaders with an honorary doctorate for their outstanding accomplishments.

WHAT: 2018 uOttawa Spring Convocation

WHERE: Shaw Centre, Canada Hall (55 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa)

WHEN: From Sunday June 10th to Wednesday June 13th

Honorary doctorates will be awarded to the following people in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to their respective field:

Dr. Cindy Blackstock, A member of the Gitxsan First Nation Cindy is a Professor at the McGill School of Social Work and Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. Best known for her work on the human rights case about First Nations child welfare funding.

Annette Verschuren, Annette Verschuren is Chair and CEO of NRStor Inc., an energy storage development company. Formerly she was president of The Home Depot Canada and Asia, and president and co-owner of Michaels of Canada. She is being honored for her technological advancements in exploring innovative and clean ways to store electricity for future use.

Dominique Massiot, Director of France’s Research Infrastructure for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Very High Fields. His research focuses on the study of disorder in organic or hybrid materials through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of materials in solid state or melts.

Donald J. Savoie , Canada Research Chair in Public Administration and Governance at the Université de Moncton. His research has had a profound influence on Canadian public policy. He has published numerous books on public policy, public administration and federalism.

Dr. Stanley Vollant is the first Indigenous surgeon trained in Quebec. Promoting healthy living among First Nations is Dr. Vollant’s main cause. He has also been involved in numerous initiatives such as establishing mini medical schools to encourage Aboriginal youth to choose a career in the health field.

Guy Berthiaume is the current Librarian and Archivist of Canada. Prior to joining Library and Archives Canada, he was the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, following a 30‑year career in academia.

John McCall MacBain, Founding Chair of the European Climate Foundation and founder of the McCall MacBain Foundation and Pamoja Capital SA, its investment arm, which has committed over $200 million to scholarships and education, health and the environment in Canada, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Thomas Wolever is Professor and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto. He is known for helping to develop the Glycaemic Index, a system for ranking the carbohydrates in foods according to how they affect blood-glucose levels. He founded GI Testing, Inc. to provide confidential GI testing services to industry.
