If you’re planning on visiting the ByWard Market on September 14, you may find yourself immersed in a world of science, as 12 local female researchers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) will showcase their work.
This event provides an opportunity for adults, teens and children alike, to meet prominent female leaders in STEMM and become inspired by their success. It is part of an international initiative by Soapbox Science, which aims to bring science to the people and challenge gender stereotypes in science careers.
The event will transform the ByWard Market into an arena for learning and scientific debate. It will show the younger generation what they can hope to accomplish in science and as a result, open a door full of exciting career paths.
The public will have the chance to meet with scientists like Dr. Odette Laneuville, Associate Professor and Director of the Biomedical Sciences Program at the University of Ottawa, who will present her research at the International Space Station. The public will also be able to talk about the environment and how pollutants are tracked in Canada with Annabel Chung, Coordinator/Office Environmental Programs at Environment and Climate Change Canada, or find out if humans are smarter than birds with Isabel Rojas-Ferrer, a PhD Candidate on Cognitive Ecology at the University of Ottawa.
Soapbox Science was launched in London in 2011. Since then, dozens of events have been organized around the world. It’s the first time the event is held in Ottawa. It is free and open to the public.
Soapbox Science 2019 Ottawa is being organized by a group of students and professors from the University of Ottawa stemming from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science, under the guidance of Janelle Fournier, a former science teacher now working on her PhD at the University of Ottawa. These individuals have joined forces in the hopes of sparking an interest in students who might not have prioritized STEMM as a potential area of study.
Soapbox Science is sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering – Ontario Region, Le génie au service des femmes : Rethinking the Faces and Spaces of Engineering, the Science Students’ Association, the Faculty of Science and the Education Graduate Students’ Association at the University of Ottawa.
