A Nobel Prize in Economics winner will headline a uOttawa Homecoming 2021 Alex Trebek Lecture Series examining the COVD-19 pandemic’s influence on the economy.
Professor Esther Duflo leads the lecture titled ‘Good economics for hard times’, which looks at how countries can better address pressing socioeconomic challenges and ensure an inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professor Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a co-founder and co-director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). In 2019, Esther Duflo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics with her husband, Abhijit Banerjee, and Michael Kremer.
In her research, she seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor, with the aim of helping to design and evaluate social policies. She has worked on health, education, financial inclusion, environment, and governance policies.
