The University of Ottawa announces a new venture to join forces with Kanata North industry to create Ottawa’s new epicentre of innovation.

To launch this initiative, uOttawa is working very closely with the Kanata North Business Association, which has been leading industry involvement in the project.

Bridging the gap between academia and industry, this initiative will provide local companies with access to more of the skills, programs and resources necessary to compete and grow. More specifically, the uOttawa X Kanata North initiative will:

  • Stimulate knowledge transfer and facilitate access to uOttawa talent, researchers and educational programs by setting up a physical presence in Kanata North
  • Help foster innovation through joint research projects
  • Offer seminars, workshops and classes that meet the specific needs of the Kanata North community and make the University’s research capacities better known
  • Connect industry and students through co-op placements, internships and alumni

KNBA welcomes uOttawa to the Kanata Tech Park as a much-needed element in a successful technology ecosystem, where industry-driven solutions flourish and research breakthroughs become commercial realities. The University will take advantage of this new venture to mobilize its 5,000 alumni active in the high-tech industry by creating a regional council in Kanata North.

Members of the media are invited to attend the launch of the uOttawa-Kanata North initiative.

“The most successful technology ecosystems around the world are defined by the close integration of industry and universities. With the uOttawa-Kanata North initiative, there are countless opportunities for the University of Ottawa to lend its research expertise to help companies grow. Conversely, we stand to benefit from the business savvy of those companies, to turn research breakthroughs into commercial reality.” - Sylvain Charbonneau, vice-president, research, University of Ottawa

“Kanata North has been at the centre of Canada’s technology sector for decades but until now, it has lacked the academic component that is so integral to building successful, self-sustaining tech ecosystems.” - Amy MacLeod, chair, Kanata North Business Association

“The Kanata North area has been home to some of my most successful companies, including Mitel and Newbridge Networks. And the industry here continues to thrive. As part of that growth, I am pleased to see the University of Ottawa taking steps to develop a stronger local presence.” - Terry Matthews, technology entrepreneur
