The Discovery Days in Health Sciences program is a yearly even that takes place at universities across Canada. It is designed to showcase the vast scope of careers in the health sciences field, to help Grade 11 students answer the classic conundrum ‘What do I want to do when I grow up?’
Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, who announced today their support of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame’s (CMHF) Discovery Days in Health Sciences program, some 150 high school students will take part in interactive workshops to learn real-world medical skills and discover the various career options in health.
“The motto for Kiwanis is One Can Make a Difference and our Medical Foundation has been making a difference in medical treatment and research since being founded in 1980 with a generous bequest from Dr. Lorne MacLachlan,” said Kiwanis Club of Ottawa President Mark O'Neill. “The Kiwanis Medical Foundation (KMF) is now very excited to partner with the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and the University of Ottawa to bring Discovery Days in Health Sciences back to Ottawa after a long hiatus. By making a difference for promising local students interested in health science careers, this program is a perfect fit for both the KMF mandate of advancing medical science and research and the broader Kiwanis priorities of serving the community and its youth.”
Hosted locally at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine, this one-day event will give Grade 11 students the chance to explore a variety of career options in medicine and in the health sciences.
“We are excited to welcome these bright young minds for Discovery Day,” said Dr. Paul Bragg, Executive Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Medicine. “Kiwanis Ottawa is playing a significant role in helping us inspire this next generation to become our exceptional clinicians, medical researchers and teachers to improve the health of Canadians and populations from all around the world.”
The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame launched this innovative education program in 1997. This year’s edition will take place at the University of Ottawa on May 31, 2019.
“Encouraging youth to choose a career in a field where they can fuel their passion to impact human health is vital to building our health workforce of tomorrow,” said Lissa Foster, Executive Director of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. “More than 85% of students who participate in this program across the country tell us that this day helped them solidify their plans to pursue a career in the health sciences, often helping them to identify a specific area of focus.”
Discovery Days are filled with interactive workshops, career panel discussions and . Students gain a clear picture of what it would be like to be a health professional by interacting with researchers, clinicians and educators in their real-life work setting
