Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier, was on our campus today on behalf of the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, to announce $18,518,580 in support for discovery research at uOttawa. These new researchers’ projects range from studying climate change to the human brain. In total, over 60 researchers and students from the University will benefit from these funds through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grants program.
The Discovery Grants program helps promote and maintain a diversified and high quality research base in the natural sciences and engineering and to foster research excellence in a stimulating environment for the training of researchers. This program recognizes that creativity and innovation are at the heart of research breakthroughs and supports science and engineering researchers as they begin their careers.
During her visit MP Fortier highlighted that the University of Ottawa will receive $468,000 from the federal government's Climate Action Fund.
Of that amount, $223,000 will be provided to the University’s Smart Prosperity Institute to support the Institute’s Clean Growth Summit.
In addition, up to $245,000 in funding will be provided to the University of Ottawa’s Institute of the Environment to produce reports that highlight how policies and actions can help Canada achieve its climate targets, while growing the economy and creating good jobs.
Funded projects will raise awareness of climate change and clean growth and encourage others to take action in support of Canada’s climate goals.
