Thirty years ago this year, a man walked into École Polytechnique - the Université de Montréal’s engineering school - carrying a semi-automatic weapon. Later that night, fourteen young women had been killed and fourteen others had been injured.
December 6 has since been designated the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women - or White Ribbon Day. Every year since the massacre, the City of Montreal and collaborators hold a commemorative ceremony, where 14 beams of light point straight up into the night sky.
This year, fourteen universities across Canada will join forces to pay tribute to the women who lost their lives by lighting their own beam of light.
The University of Ottawa invites you to join its commemorate ceremony and vigil on Friday, December 6, 2019 at dusk, where along with shining a beam of light, the victims’ names will be projected onto the exterior wall of the STEM building and a vigil will be held.
