In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Convention on the Rights of the Child, the University of Ottawa has teamed up with Carleton University and the Ottawa International Writers Festival to organize The Republic of Childhood Youth Forum.

The Forum will take place in Ottawa on November 20-22, 2019, and will connect young writers with authors, researchers, and community members from Canada and across the world. All of them will be invited to exercise their rights to self-expression and participation.

During the Forum, student participants will be encouraged to think about their rights as young people and explore a set of future challenges during writing workshops that will cover themes like Health and Wellness, Environmental Change, Technology and Society, and Culture and Identity.

Their contributions will be published online so that their ideas and insights can be shared with policymakers, practitioners and other researchers whose work directly affects the lives of children and youth.

uOttawa’s professors Nicholas Ng-A-Fook and Linda Radford are part of The Republic of Childhood Youth Forum project team.

“The Republic of Childhood” initiative was launched in 2017 by The Writers Festival in order to bring more attention to the voices and stories of young people.

The Forum curriculum guide is available here.
