The University of Ottawa offers its deepest condolences after the passing of Dr. Wilbert Keon

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Wilbert Keon, founder of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Keon was the first Canadian to perform a human heart transplant, and he had an incalculable impact on the lives of thousands of Canadians.

Dr. Keon always made the patient the central focus of his actions. He led the Heart Institute to the forefront of treatment of heart disease, cardiovascular research and medical education in Canada. He was admired as a heart surgeon the world over, inspiring numerous youth to follow in his footsteps, while serving as a model for his many colleagues. For the latter, he embodied the very essence of compassionate medicine.

The University of Ottawa has lost one of its great ambassadors. On behalf of our entire University community, I wish to offer my deepest condolences to Dr. Keon’s family, friends and colleagues.

Jacques Frémont,

President and Vice Chancellor
