The University has agreed to the daycare’s request to continue to use its current spaces with the commitment that a six-months advance notice will be provided prior to demolition unless it is not feasible to do so for safety and security considerations.

In the Fall of 2021, the University informed the management team at the Garderie Bernadette Child Care Centre of its intention to demolish the Brooks buildings because of construction defects. Garderie Bernadette Child Care Centre is an independent organization that operates rent-free in the Brooks buildings.

Brooks is a multi-part facility, of which the daycare occupies one space. The University has agreed to the daycare’s request to continue to use its current spaces with the commitment that a six-months advance notice will be provided prior to demolition unless it is not feasible to do so for safety and security considerations. The University continues to closely monitor the safety of the space occupied by the daycare. No date has been set for the demolition as this is part of a bigger reconstruction project that is in the planning phase.

The University appreciates the challenges of finding quality daycare, but it is unfortunately unable to provide alternative space that meets the strict requirements for licensed daycare facilities. We are committed to exploring future solutions for our students, faculty and staff.
