Canada’s bio-economy is booming. Many technologies in this sector depend on protein engineering.
Professor Roberto A. Chica from the Faculty of Sciences has been awarded $1,650,000 for his Advanced Protein Engineering Training, Internships, Courses and Exhibition (APRENTICE) program, which aims to provide students with comprehensive training in all aspects of modern protein engineering research. Chica hopes to provide trainees with leading-edge multidisciplinary training in this field, foster the development of future innovators and entrepreneurs and help apprentices gain skills to become employment ready.
As well, more and more positions are being advertised in metabolomics, including in food sciences, biofuels and biotech companies. For Dr. Mary-Ellen Harper, Faculty of Medicine, there is an urgent need for training programs that focus on metabolomics. Harper has received a $1,650,000 grant to develop her Metabolomics Advances Training and International Exchange (MATRIX). With this training program, graduates will be empowered with the scientific knowledge, hands-on skills and professional abilities companies are seeking to fill the exponentially growing number of positions.
