Today, over 40 Canadian post-secondary institutions will come together to sign the Scarborough Charter, the first national action plan to tackle anti-Black racism in Canadian higher education as a sector-wide response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
WHAT: Official launch and signing of the Scarborough Charter, the first national action plan for Canadian post-secondary institutions to redress anti-Black racism and foster Black inclusion in higher education. WHY: Social justice is central to everything that universities and colleges stand for. George Floyd’s murder and the protests of 2020 prompted higher education institutions to identify how equity, diversity and inclusion have historically been excluded from research, teaching, learning, and governance. The landmark Scarborough Charter lays out concrete actions and accountability mechanisms for institutions to move from rhetoric and deliver on their promise of structural and systemic change. This first-of-its-kind plan will spearhead meaningful change in higher-ed culture.
