The True Measure of a Soldier: Far More Than Just Body Mass Index
Members of the media may directly contact:
François Haman (English & French)
Full Professor, School of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Health Sciences
Professor Haman is working on projects that aim to enhance human performance, not just physically, but also mentally and environmentally. His research could lead to breakthroughs that benefit athletes, soldiers, and even private companies operating in extreme conditions.
“A soldier's true measure lies far beyond the number on a scale, encompassing mental toughness, emotional resilience, and the ability to adapt under pressure. While physical fitness, including body mass index, is essential, it is qualities like teamwork, leadership, and moral judgment that enable soldiers to excel in complex and unpredictable environments. The making of a soldier requires a harmonious balance of physical capability, mental sharpness, and emotional strength, supported by access to proper equipment, nutritious food, and well-equipped training facilities. This proves that a soldier's worth cannot be reduced to a single metric.”
Professor Haman will be accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel (retired) Markus Besemann, M.D., for media interviews.
