The Hardware Standards Advisory group meets four times a year and is part of Information Technology’s governance ecosystem. Members discuss how the technological landscape has changed and how this impacts the computer purchases for employees in the faculties and services. They can then assess the equipment available from our suppliers of record, Dell and Apple, to provide models around which the University standardizes, to have consistent configurations. The range includes cell phones, headphones, monitors, desktops, laptops, mice, keyboards, Web cameras and other accessories to support these.
Many things are involved. They also need to look at the software requirements to ensure the computer models selected will meet the daily needs of users. Security of the hardware needs to be evaluated. Throughout all this, industry standards and best practices are observed in parallel with keeping an eye on the quality/price ratio. What they are looking for are reliable, quality devices that will last and which are unpinned by a solid warranty and effective support plan. The end result is the purchase of standardized equipment available in the Self-Service Centre under Work Space, Order IT Equipment. Information Technology carries an inventory of the popular models to ensure timely delivery of requests for equipment.
