What was your last career change?
I made a bold and exciting transition from a senior management role at the National Bank of Canada to a dynamic position in the university sector. Shifting from the fast-paced world of finance to the collaborative and knowledge-driven environment of higher education was both a challenge and an opportunity to grow. This move allowed me to leverage my strategic expertise in a new context while embracing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to problem-solving.
What made it successful?
The success of my transition was largely due to the support and collaboration of my university colleagues. Their willingness to share knowledge, provide guidance, and help me navigate the new environment made the onboarding process much smoother. The university culture values collaboration, and by engaging with my colleagues and asking the right questions, I was able to bridge the gap between my previous experience and my new role.
What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?
The biggest challenge was adjusting to a different approach to information management. In my previous role, most knowledge was documented and easily accessible, whereas in the university environment, a lot of critical information is shared through experience and personal interactions. Adapting to this new way of gathering insights required building relationships and engaging in more conversations.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?
Be open to learning and asking questions, even if it feels uncomfortable. Building relationships with colleagues is key, especially in environments where knowledge is shared informally rather than through documentation.
How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?
By sharing their insights, experiences, and institutional knowledge openly. Mentorship and regular check-ins can make a big difference in helping someone navigate a new environment.
What do you look forward to in your day?
I look forward to the moments of discovery and collaboration that each day brings. Whether it’s uncovering new insights about the university’s IT landscape, or solving complex challenges, every day presents an opportunity to learn and grow. I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of my role, finding ways to bridge information gaps, and improving processes to create a more efficient and effective environment. Additionally, the sense of community and shared purpose within the university makes each interaction fulfilling, reminding me that my work contributes to a larger mission of education and innovation.
