In June 2023, the University of Ottawa launched the Microsoft 365 (M365) Security Hardening project to strengthen cybersecurity for its community.
The project, now successfully completed, had a primary goal of enhancing the security of uOttawa’s Microsoft 365 environment, ensuring the safety of personal and institutional data. Throughout the process, key improvements were implemented, including:
- Updated Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) protocols: Strengthened MFA settings to provide better protection against unauthorized access.
- Revised password policies: Adjustments to ensure stronger, more secure passwords, balancing convenience and security for users.
- Changes to session validity periods: Reduced session durations to mitigate risks from unattended or hijacked devices.
These enhancements directly contribute to reducing the likelihood of cybersecurity incidents, such as compromised accounts or widespread phishing attacks, thereby protecting students, faculty, and staff.
Cybersecurity: A Shared Responsibility
While the M365 Security Hardening project marks a significant milestone, cybersecurity is an ongoing effort. As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is essential for every member of the community to remain vigilant and engaged.
