"It is important to reflect on the role of national symbols—such as national flags—and how they are sometimes manipulated by political elites and various social interest groups. While flags and other national symbols can be seen as controversial because they are used to advance specific agendas, they still represent important values such as self-determination, autonomy, sovereignty, and solidarity among people—ideals to which everyone aspires."
