Statement by Jacques Frémont, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa, on the report of the États généraux de l'éducation postsecondaire en contexte francophone minoritaire.

“We salute the important work of the ACUFC [Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne] and the FCFA [Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada] during their États généraux sur le postsecondaire en contexte francophone minoritaire, and the publication of their report. The vitality of Francophone communities in Ontario and Canada has been at the heart of the University of Ottawa’s very existence for 175 years. We fully endorse the principle of inter-institutional collaboration, which is central to this report, and we will work with our partners to enable the systemic changes needed to ensure Francophone post-secondary educational institutions across Canada can thrive in service of their communities.

The University of Ottawa offers 265 programs in French to a growing number of Francophone students from across Canada and around the world. We are working to increase the number of these programs to meet the demands of Francophone communities. For example, in 2023 we will launch a new pharmacy program that will join the numerous health-care training programs we offer solely in French. Since 2016, the vast majority of our undergraduate programs are designated under Ontario’s French Language Services Act.

Our Transformation 2030 strategic plan reaffirms our commitment to strengthening our ties with the greater Franco-Ontarian community in order to bolster its vitality and development.”
