A man who is counted among the all-time hockey greats will be honoured at the University of Ottawa's fall 2000 convocation.
In just seven full NHL seasons, Ken Dryden won six Stanley Cup rings and claimed countless individual awards for his outstanding performances. From early on, the articulate scholar-athlete's commitment to education was also apparent. He missed the 1973-74 season to fulfill his law school requirements, working with a Toronto law firm for $137 a week. A five-time Vezina Trophy recipient and winner of the Conn Smythe and Calder trophies, he is a member of Hockey Hall of Fame, Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and NHL 100th Anniversary All-Time All-Star Team.
Since leaving the game as a player, Dryden has written several highly acclaimed, best-selling books, including The Game (acknowledged by many as one of the finest hockey publications ever written) and Home Game, which was developed into an award-winning documentary series for television. His most recent book, In School, is a masterful examination of Canada's education system.
Dryden has also worked as a television commentator and host, as well as Youth Commissioner for the province of Ontario and consultant on youth unemployment and education for the Yukon government. Most recently, Dryden has been appointed president of the Toronto Maple Leafs and executive vice-president of Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd. A frequent lecturer, Dryden is known for his passionate views and willingness to tackle difficult issues with superb powers of observation, compassionate insight, honesty and humanity.
