André Marcheterre is an acknowledged leader in the pharmaceutical industry. A University of Ottawa alumnus (BAdm ’75), he has had a long and distinguished career, which includes serving as President of Merck Frosst Canada, one of the largest pharmaceutical research companies in the country.
Mr. Marcheterre began working at Merck Frost Canada in 1977. He rose through the ranks, holding positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of sales, marketing and government relations. In 1995, he was named Vice-President for the mid-Atlantic region, part of the U.S. human health division. Two years later, he returned to Canada as President of Merck Frost Canada, a position he held until his retirement in September 2006.
As President, he helped attract public and media interest in the company and gave it a more human face. A man of action who enjoys a challenge and whose clear-eyed advice is much sought after, Mr. Marcheterre has always paid special attention not only to his clients, but also to his staff and industry partners, be they in the private, public or university sector.
Mr. Marcheterre played a leading role in Canada’s Research Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D), where he served as a member of the Quebec regional committee and the executive committee. He chaired the board of directors for two terms. He has also served on the boards of Genome Canada, the Centre québécois d’innovation en biotechnologie, Desjardins Financial Security, Montréal International and the Board Of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.
In 1999, the Telfer School of Management Alumni Association awarded Mr. Marcheterre a Trudeau Medal, the highest honour given by the school, for his outstanding achievements. We are delighted to be able to once again honour this visionary builder and innovator, who shows such confidence in the new generation of business leaders, including our alumni.
