The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response team at the Human Rights Office provides free, neutral, confidential and intersectional trauma-informed support and counselling.

You are not alone

Services provided by the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response team.

We provide services to students, faculty members and support staff who may be directly or indirectly affected by sexual harassment and sexual violence, or any other form of gender-based violence.  

We also serve individuals who have questions about their own conduct.

Support  

  • Short-term listening and support, in line with a survivor-centric approach
  • Assistance in implementing safety plans
  • Assistance in submitting requests for academic and workplace accommodations  
  • Information for University community members to whom a survivor has disclosed an incident

Advice

  • Referrals to appropriate services on and off campus
  • Provision of information on the limits of confidentiality
  • Provision of information on options in terms of filing a complaint, in accordance with Policy 67b – Prevention of Sexual Violence, and other options on and off campus  
  • Liaison with the Ottawa Police Service, if desired
  • Investigation after a complaint has been filed, if desired
  • Listening and advice for anyone who has questions about a behaviour or situation related to any form of sexual harassment or violence

Prevention

  • Creation and delivery of training courses on consent, bystander intervention and prevention of sexual violence  
  • On- and off-campus awareness-raising activities (organization and participation)

Our team is available Monday to Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., online or occasionally in person without an appointment. Please call 613-562-5222 to check our availability before you come see us.

If you need emergency assistance on campus, contact Protection Services (24/7) at 613-562-5411 or through the SecurUO app. Off campus, contact the Ottawa Police Service (911).

I’ve been working with youth and families for 15 years. I strive to support survivors throughout their journey, while being aware of the conditions they are experiencing. I like to implement an accessible approach to help members of the University community innovate with a view to becoming leaders in sexual violence prevention.

Senior Advisor, Sexual Violence Prevention

A social worker by training, I have several years’ experience working with survivors of all types of gender-based violence. My role is to accompany the members of our community and provide them with tools so they can make their own decisions, at a time that suits them best. I do so with empathy, patience and non-judgmental listening.  

Marie-Alexandra Major

Marie-Alexandra Major (she/her)

Lead Advisor, Human Rights and Dispute Resolution

With legal training in both law and social work, I have over 10 years’ investigative experience in the field of child protection. I have the skills and competencies required to conduct investigations within various groups in a variety of contexts. My investigations are conducted impartially and fairly, using a survivor-centric approach.

From January 20th to January 24th, 2025, as part of this campus awareness week, the Human Rights Office's Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Team and its partners have prepared a variety of activities and workshops for the entire university community.
