A look at the University of Ottawa’s plans for a fun, safe and respectful Homecoming Weekend.

It’s that time of the year again – leaves start changing colours, the air gets brisk, and you get an irresistible urge to shout: “Go Gee-Gees!” Homecoming weekend is here! It’s time to show off your school colours, reconnect with friends, cheer for your favourite team, and Tame the Panda!

Protect, Respect and Tame the Panda is this year’s campaign to make sure we all celebrate responsibly. It was developed in close consultation with community stakeholders such as the Ottawa Police Service, OSEG, Action Sandy Hill, the City of Ottawa and Carleton University. The campaign calls on fans to celebrate the game like we play it: respectfully, fairly and safely.

We have been talking to our alumni and students, canvassing neighboring communities, sharing messages on social media and on campus, and working on deterrence measures to prevent disruptive behavior and promote a safe and responsible Homecoming weekend for all.

Highlights of our messaging to students:

·You want to celebrate the Panda. We do, too… Each year, our city and our neighbours allow us to hold this historic event. This year, no matter how and where we decide to celebrate, let’s make sure we honour their generosity by celebrating with respect. It’s up to us to protect Panda.

·Please stay away from residential neighbourhood streets. Many establishments in the city are hosting Panda-related events.

·There will be increased presence of Police and Bylaw Officers before and after the game. Destruction of property, illegal parties, disorderly conduct and acts of violence will not be tolerated by the Ottawa Police Service. So, spread the word.

Homecoming eventsare open to all uOttawa students, alumni and staff, and to the general public.

The kick-off for the53rd annual Panda Gameagainst the Carleton Ravens at TD Place field is on October 1, 2022, at noon.

Go Gee-Gees!
