We were saddened to learn of the passing of Marc Jolicoeur last week. During his long years working to promote the development and influence of the University of Ottawa, he was a gentleman and a friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered as an outstanding leader and builder whose generosity knew no bounds.

Marc’s connection to the University began 50 years ago as a student and graduate of business administration (1975), and then, law (1978). After graduation, this brilliant lawyer put all his energy and intelligence at the service of the University and established himself as one of the pillars of its development.

Caring deeply about future generations and the dissemination of knowledge, Marc was determined to help the University of Ottawa increase its influence and contribution to research and innovation. For fifteen years, he was a committed member of the Board of Governors, including seven as chair during a period of significant growth. He also took part in various committees and fundraising campaigns to enable the University to achieve its ambitions. Among other things, he led the Vision 2010 strategic planning, the adoption of a new construction capital plan and the establishment of success indicators for our institution. His involvement was instrumental in the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the University's history.

Marc’s altruism was also reflected in the scholarship he created with his spouse, Kathleen Faulkner, for undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section or the Telfer School of Management.

Through his leadership and humanity, this nationally respected lawyer and great philanthropist will remain an inspiration for generations to come. We will miss him greatly, and we will ensure that his legacy continues to guide the future of the University and of the community that he so skillfully helped build.

On behalf of the University community and myself, I extend our deepest condolences to Marc’s family and friends, including his wife, Kathleen Faulkner, and his sons David and Mathieu. Marc’s impact on the greater Ottawa community will be lasting.

Friends are invited to pay their respects at Beechwood Cemetery at 280 Beechwood Avenue on Thursday March 17 from 4-8 p.m. A memorial service will also be held at 1 p.m. on Friday March 18 at Beechwood Cemetery. The University of Ottawa will also hold a special commemoration ceremony of celebration of the life of Marc Jolicoeur at a later date, to be announced.
