| This course examines the development of social thought and of the social sciences since the Renaissance. The Social Sciences have been shaped by the forces of modernity; some of them, like economics and sociology, emerge in response to the political, economic, and social changes that characterize the beginnings of the modern era. The course will focus on the relations between these societal changes and the history of ideas on the individual, the state, society, and culture. |

| Ce cours examine comment les savoirs sur les soci�t�s humaines se sont constitu�s et organis�s � partir de la Renaissance. Les sciences sociales s'inscrivent dans une histoire qui a �t� fortement marqu�e par l'av�nement de la modernit�, au point que certaines d'entre elles - comme la science �conomique et la sociologie - peuvent �tre d'abord envisag�es � partir des rapports qu'elles pr�sentent avec les changements politiques, �conomiques et sociaux accomplis � partir des d�buts de l'�poque moderne. Il s'agit donc de mettre en relief la nature des rapports entre ces divers changements et l'histoire des id�es sur l'individu, l'�tat, la soci�t� et la culture. |

The role of reasoning and data in explanation. The role of theories and paradigms in the organization and the production of knowledge. Stages in the scientific research process. Overview of the main quantitative, qualitative, visualisation techniques and methods used in the social sciences. |
