The integrated Lettres françaises et éducation programs meet future teachers' needs by closely co-ordinating studies in French and teacher training. Starting in first year, you will study concepts in education while gaining a solid grounding in French. As well, your first in-school practicum will take place right in fourth year, thus allowing you to gain an early grasp of issues in the teaching profession, and to make practical connections between the theories you learn on campus, in both disciplines, and the practical experience you gain in the classroom.
To teach in
- elementary schools from junior kindergarten through grade 6 (ages 4 to 12), you have to select the primary/junior divisions;
- elementary schools from grades 4 through 6 (ages 9 to 14 ), you have to select the junior/intermediate divisions; this option also qualifies you to teach grades 4 through 10 (ages 9 to 16);
- secondary schools from grades 9 through 12; ages 14 to 18), you have to select the intermediate/senior divisions; this option also qualifies you to teach grades 7 through 12 (ages 12 to 18).
Please note:
• If you plan to teach secondary school, you also have to take at least 12 credits in a second discipline encompassing a subject you would teach.
• The Faculty of Education administers a French-language proficiency test at the end of the first year, and you must pass this test to remain in the BEd program. If you don't get a passing grade on your first attempt, you can stay in the program provided
o you take the grammar and style courses required to raise your level of proficiency (to that end, you should speak to the chair of the baccalaureate committee at Département de français), and
o you pass the test the following year (you have no more chances afterward).
If you gain admission to one of the integrated programs, you must comply with the regulations of both faculties, that is, Education and Arts.
