Faculty of Engineering
HISTORICAL NOTE
The University of Ottawa was founded in 1848 and chartered in
1866. It wasted little time in making science and engineering part
of its fields of instruction. As early as 1874, the University
bolstered the mathematics and science components of its classical
studies program, and in the same period, established a civil
engineering program, which had to be abolished shortly
afterwards.
After the Second World War, the University kept in step with the
new rise in popularity of the pure and applied sciences by
establishing the School of Applied Sciences. In 1953, it created the
School of Pure and Applied Sciences, which was given faculty
status in 1962.
This faculty was composed of seven departments, two of which
were in engineering. Ten years later, it had four engineering
departments and went by the name of the Faculty of Science and
Engineering. On July 1, 1986, the University opted for the
establishment of both a Faculty of Science and a Faculty of
Engineering, each with its own dean, professors, and programs.
The Faculty of Engineering was then made up of four departments:
Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
and Mechanical Engineering.
On May 1, 1997, the Department of Computer Science joined the
Faculty of Engineering from the Faculty of Science. This was
accompanied by a merger of the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science to
form the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE)
within the Faculty of Engineering. Thus, the faculty currently has
three departments (Chemical, Civil and
Mechanical Engineering departments) and the School of
Information Technology and Engineering. The Faculty of
Engineering is governed by a council made up of professors and
students from each department and chaired by the Dean, who is
also the Executive Director of the Faculty. Also part of the upper
administration are the Vice-Dean, the Associate Dean (academic)
and the Secretary.
The faculty has 106 professors as well as 2,800 undergraduate
students and 760 graduate students working towards their
doctorate or masters degree. The faculty offers undergraduate
programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer
engineering, computer science, computing technology, electrical
engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering, as
well as a certificate in software technology. The computing
technology program is offered concurrently with the chemical, civil,
electrical and mechanical engineering programs. All engineering
programs have a management and entrepreneurship option. The
Department of Chemical Engineering offers a joint program with
the Department of Biochemistry in the field of biotechnology. All
programs are offered with a co-operative education option.
The faculty also offers graduate programs in all engineering and
computer science programs leading to MEng, MASc, MSc and PhD
degrees. Consult the calendar of the Faculty of Graduate and
Postdoctoral Studies for more information.
