School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE)
Information technology (IT) is experiencing tremendous growth around the world. The University of Ottawas Faculty of Engineering has responded to the demand for highly qualified IT professionals creating the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE). With SITE, all the Universitys information technology programs and resources come together into a coherent organizational response to the new needs of industry and society.
SITE employs approximately 65 professors and more than 25 technical and administrative support staff. As the focal point of information technology on campus, SITE offers three well-established programs, namely electrical engineering, computer engineering, software engineering and computer science (which includes the information management systems option).
Since September 1998, SITE has been offering an exciting new program in software engineering, one of the first such BASc program in Canada. Software engineering as a BASc program emphasizes a broad balance between strong software design expertise and skills, professional engineering practice, and entrepreneurial and business sense. All SITE programs take into account the networking and distributed characteristics of information technology. In addition, SITE offers service courses to students in other traditional engineering disciplines to allow them to upgrade their capabilities and skills in information technology and obtain a second degree, the BSc in computing technology. SITE also offers a certificate program in software technology that combines software business and software skills education.
SITE is very well connected to the high-technology and information technology sector. In particular, SITE benefits from an industrial advisory board consisting of high-level executives from several leading corporations and research laboratories. The board mentors SITE in matters related to industry, ensuring industrial relevance of our programs and providing opportunities for student and professor interaction with key corporate scientists and engineers. The board has initiated highly successful industrial internships for IT students. As a consequence, SITEs co-operative education students often receive attractive job offers.
SITE is located in one of Canadas most dynamic centres of high-technology and information technology, often called Silicon Valley of the North. In addition to the numerous opportunities for employment in the high-technology companies in the region, SITE students also have access to opportunities for leading-edge information technology careers in government research laboratories and departments.
Finally, SITE is committed to the principle of bilingualism in post-secondary education. Many of the programs can be partially completed in either official language.
