Visual Arts

The Department of Visual Arts offers two programs: a BA with concentration in visual arts and a bachelor of fine arts (BFA).

The three-year BA with concentration in visual arts is an introduction to contemporary art practice and its relation to theory and history of art.

The four-year bachelor of fine arts is geared to original forms of expression associated with the new millennium. While respecting the traditional disciplines (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography), the department extends its teaching to new technologies (media arts).

Each of these two programs can be combined with a bilingual concentration in arts administration.

The following objectives are met through the study and practice of visual arts:

- awaken and encourage the students’ creative and intellectual abilities;
- transmit basic theoretical and practical tools for the understanding and practice of art;
- foster the students’ faculties of perception and critical judgement through theoretical discourse and studio
experience;
- examine works of art, for the most part of North American and European origin, in their historical
contexts as expressions of the individual and society; and
- enlarge the scope of the students’ knowledge by requiring elective studies outside the department’s
immediate field of competence.

The Department of Visual Arts offers the above programs to the two linguistic groups. In theory and history of art, students choose courses in French or English. Studio and photography courses after the first year are given bilingually. This approach encourages a creative exchange between the two linguistic and cultural traditions.

The Department of Visual Arts is responsible for courses with codes beginning with ART and AMT.

Art and Archaeology Slide Library

The Department of Visual Arts and the Department of Classics and Religious Studies, together with the
University’s Media Library have established a collection of 165,000 slides. This collection covers the great
periods of the history of art from prehistory to the present time. Over 35,000 of these slides document
Greek and Roman Antiquity as well as archaeology. Located at Morisset Library Hall, room 128, the slide
library welcomes students as well as professors and serves as a resource centre for studies, research and
teaching. (Information: (613) 562-5800, ext. 3720).
