Communication

The Department of Communication offers an interdisciplinary program in organizational communication and media studies which corresponds to the evolution of social needs and the development of information and communication technologies.

Combining theory and practice, the courses in the concentration and the honours programs help students to develop critical and analytical skills, providing a theoretical foundation, and professional training in areas of specialization.

The programs specifically allow students:
- to become acquainted with the principles of interpersonal and organizational communication;
- to situate the media in their social, cultural, economic, political and legal environment;
- to evaluate the introduction of new information and communication media;
- to develop skills in the planning, design, and execution of media productions;
- to develop an appreciation and understanding of the aesthetics of media; and
- to structure critical and constructive arguments.

At the completion of their undergraduate studies, students will have the knowledge and skills necessary to work as communication professionals or to pursue graduate studies.

The department offers a co-op option for honours students.

There is also four bidisciplinary programs including Communication and Lettres françaises; Communication and Philosophy; Communication and Political Science and Communication and Sociology.

The department also offers a baccalaureate in journalism. This is a joint program with Algonquin College.

The Department of Communication is responsible for courses with codes beginning with CMN.

Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.0 at the University of Ottawa (or a miminum of 70 per cent at another institution) in order to register for the concentration program and a minumum of 6.5 (or a miminum of 75 per cent) to register for the honours.

The Communication Students' Association

All students registered in the Department of Communication are members of the Communication Students’ Association (CSA). The CSA is designed to give its members, as future communicators, a voice heard not only within the Faculty of Arts, but also throughout the campus.

The association’s principal objectives:
- promote the rights and interests of the Department of Communication in general and its student body in particular;
- participate fully in the decisions concerning life in the department;
- develop a spirit of initiative in the students;
- promote bilingualism; and
- encourage participation from students, administration and professors in all activities.
