History
History is the intellectual discipline whose subject matter is the entire range of human experience through time. The Department of History offers a broad foundation of historical knowledge and a demanding intellectual training. Students thereby acquire an ability to detect patterns in the past, to measure change over time, to place the present in perspective, to recognize and evaluate traditions, assumptions, myths and ideologies. Moreover, students also develop a critical spirit, a thoroughness and a meticulousness in asking questions, discovering sources, solving problems and presenting results in a written, oral or graphic form. A particular interest in social North American and French-Canadian history marks the Department of History.
Students may, however, sample almost all types of history and most geographical and chronological areas: intellectual history, political history, economic history, cultural history, the history of international relations, of ethnic groups and of women, Canadian history, European history, American history, Chinese history, South Asian and Southeast Asian history and Latin American history.
The Department of History is responsible for courses with codes beginning with HIS.
