Philosophy
Philosophy remains today the systematic study of basic beliefs about the world, and our place in it, which are often presupposed by other more specialized branches of inquiry. Philosophy is not, however, the mere expressing of opinions, even on such questions. It is rather their exposure to as rigorous and critical an examination as can be devised, through the study of the great philosophers and the fundamental philosophical questions. More than most subjects, philosophy places emphasis on the study of its own history. The Department of Philosophy proposes this endeavor in all its courses and programs and tries to do so in a fruitful confrontation of both the Anglo-American and the continental school of thought (French and German).
The Department of Philosophy is responsible for courses with codes beginning with PHI.

Colloquium
Each year the department invites a number of philosophers, mostly from other institutions, to present papers concerning their research. These lectures, of which there are usually about six each session, are attended by students as well as members of the staff. Normally lectures are either in English or in French, but some are bilingual. Detailed programs are available from the department.
Philosophy Students' Association
The aim of the association is to encourage the participation of students in the life of the department, as well as to provide a forum for philosophical debate and discussion. To this end, the association sponsors Philosophia, a series of public talks on various subjects of interest to specialists and non-specialists alike. In addition, the association publishes an annual collection of papers, mostly by students, under the title De Philosophia.
Exchange program with the Dominican College
In order to be eligible for the exchange program, students must be admitted to a baccalaureate with concentration or honours in philosophy degree program at the home university. Only courses to be credited as part of the degree requirements qualify for this exchange. Results for courses taken at the home university will be converted according to the equivalence table of the institutions involved and will appear on the transcript and count in the calculation of the grade point average.
