ESL0111 Special Project  
Supervised research/material development project to be evaluated for content and academic language use. The project may be based on some of the special language teaching resources in the University, e.g., Multimedia Laboratories (FA), Writing Centre (FA), Learning Resource Centre (FE), Second Language Resource Centre - Learning Section (SLI), Research and Evaluation Sector (SLI); or in the region (e.g., immersion education). The project may also involve issues relating to language teaching in the student's home country.
Course reserved for students in the Advanced English and EFL Pedagogy Certificate program.

ESL1000 Test de compétence en anglais langue seconde / Test of Proficiency in English as a Second Language 6 cr.
The test is offered during registration according to a schedule determined by the Second Language Institute. In all cases, students must make an appointment at the Second Language Institute a few days before the testing session.
In the case of a significant discrepancy between students'observed second language performance and their results on the Proficiency Test, the Second Language Institute reserves the right to require additional evaluation.

ESL1111 Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Elementary Level I (4,0,0) 3 cr.
Development of basic language knowledge (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar). Identification and understanding of topic, facts, and the main and supporting ideas of oral and written texts. Practice in simple oral exchanges. Introduction to written expression.
These credits exclude those of ESL1211. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL1112 Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Elementary Level II (4,0,0) 3 cr.
Development of oral and written comprehension. Relevant vocabulary and grammatical structures. Practice in simple conversation, basic writing skills and note taking.
Prerequisite: ESL1111 or equivalent. These credits exclude those of ESL1211. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL2112 Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Intermediate Level II (4,0,0) 3 cr.
Comprehension of general and academic written and oral texts. Written expression at the paragraph and text levels. Development of oral communication through discussions and presentations. Consolidation of grammatical knowledge.

ESL2113 French Grammar for Second Language Learners: Intermediate Level. 3 cr.
Introduction to and practice with basic simple sentences including noun phrases and verb phrases with complements. Verb conjugations. Use of prepositions.
Prerequisite: FLS1512 or equivalent. May be taken concurrently with FSLS2511, FLS2512 or FLS2611. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL2121 Advanced Written Language Skills for Second Language Learners (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Development of reading skills as a basis for writing a variety of texts. Refinement of grammatical and vocabulary knowledge.
Prerequisite: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL2122 Advanced Oral Language Skills for Second Language Learners (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Development and refinement of listening skills as a basis for oral communication. Introduction to critical listening. Practice in note-taking. Production of extended oral texts. Use of formal and informal registers. Refinement of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation skills.
Prerequisite: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL2181 Sheltered Course (1.5,0,0) 3 cr.
Discipline-based second language course. This course is an adjunct to the three-credit discipline courses selected in the program for that purpose. It allows for the development of proficiency in the second language while acquiring knowledge and expertise in the specific discipline.
Prerequisite: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted.

Development of listening strategies and skills in context-reduced speech. Systematic exposure to a variety of accents, suprasegmental variations and registers with varied delivery and text types. Practice in understanding lectures and taking notes. Development of critical listening.

Refinement of reading skills and strategies. Introduction to critical reading. Study of extended texts (articles, book chapters).

Organization and development of expository prose in formal English. Practice in achieving appropriateness of expression; grammatical refinement and vocabulary development.

ESL2371 Advanced English Grammar for Second Language Learners I (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Review of parts of speech and their functions, determiners, and prepositions; the English verb system including tenses, gerunds, infinitives and modals; compound and complex sentences.
Prerequisites: ESL2121 and ESL2122 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL2372 English Pronunciation for Second Language Speakers (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Improvement of pronunciation through instruction and practice focusing on the segmentals (e.g., articulation of sounds) and the suprasegmentals (e.g., major stress patterns, intonation and rhythm). Development of self-monitoring and self-correction strategies. Individual practice.
Prerequisite: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted.

ESL3100 Second Language Proficiency: Practice and Assessment 3 cr.
Diagnostic and strategy development exercises in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, academic writing and oral communication skills at high-intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency. A proficiency profile certificate is issued upon successful completion of a series of tests.

ESL3165 Advanced English for EFL/ESL Teaching: Theory 3 cr.
Development of specialized language skills for the study of EFL/ESL methodology and curriculum design. Introduction of theoretical concepts, principles and terminology. Analysis of language conventions related to the teaching of listening and reading skills and grammatical concepts.
Reserved for students in the Advanced English and EFL Pedagogy Certificate Program.

ESL3166 Advanced English for EFL/ESL Teaching: Practice 3 cr.
Development of specialized language skills for EFL/ESL teaching practice. Analysis and practice of language conventions related to classroom management and teaching methodology with an emphasis on speaking and writing instruction. Observation and analysis of language use by experienced teachers in ESL classrooms. Development of a Special Project (ESL 0111).

ESL3375 The Cultural Dimension of Communication in a Second Language (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Contribution of cultural knowledge to the quality of communication in English. Comparative study of reactions of different linguistic groups to shared situations based on cultural assumptions. Applications.
