OMT3110 Ocular Anatomy & Physiology (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Eye anatomy and physiology, orbit and adnexa with an overview of ocular embryology.

OMT3111 Optics and Optical Instruments (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Physical and geometrical optics; introduction to physiological optics as related to optical systems. Topics include vergences, properties of lenses, mirrors, focal planes, lens surface powers, sphero-cylindrical lenses, Sturm's conoid, transposition, Snell's law of refraction and prisms.
Prerequisites: PHY1302, PHY1201.

OMT3112 Refractometry (1,0,0.5) 2 cr.
The eye as an optical system as it applies to refraction; all phases of refractometry including various techniques and instruments used. Students will receive lectures and hands-on training in refraction.

Introduction to perimetry including a review of the visual system, retinal sensitivity, spatial localization, fields of view, visual field analysis, testing strategies and types of perimetry.

OMT3114 Ophthalmic Photography (1,0,0.5) 2 cr.
Techniques of modern ophthalmic photography. Topics include basic image formation, light intensity, exposure variables, filters, types of cameras their components and functions. Students will receive lectures and hands-on training in fundus and external photography.

OMT3115 Basic Science Ophthalmic Seminars (2,0,0) 2 cr.
Complete ophthalmology lecture series detailing the anatomy and physiology of the eye, ocular diseases and disorders encompassing both the more common conditions to the more complicated cases, proper intervention and management techniques.

OMT3117 Glaucoma (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Glaucoma types, causes and treatments, pathophysiology of aqueous humor, anatomy and physiology of the optic nerve and nerve fiber layer, intraocular pressure, glaucomatous field defects and the evaluation of the anterior chamber depth.
Prerequisite: OMT3110.

OMT3118 Neuro-Ophthalmology (1,0,0) 1 cr.
The nervous system as it relates to the eye with particular attention to the sensory visual pathway and pupil function.
Prerequisite: OMT3110.

OMT3119 Ocular Motility-l (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Useful terminology related to extraocular muscle interaction in preparation for the strabismus evaluation. Other topic include the extraocular muscle anatomy and function, binocularity, fixation, sensory tests, stereoacuity, vergences, types of eye movement and the use of prisms.

A-Scan biometry including basic principles of ultrasound, examination procedures, trouble-shooting and intraocular lens calculation. Brief overview of B-Scan ultrasonography will also be discussed.

OMT3121 Ophthalmic Microbiology (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Study of the normal bacterial flora of the conjunctiva and eyelid, types of bacteria associated with eye disease, basic of eye culture including types and techniques for specimen staining. This course will also introduce ocular pathology with emphasis on inflammation, infection and degenerative diseases of the eye.

OMT3130 Clinical Application-l 5 cr.
Introduction to patient care procedures in ophthalmology, to a variety of equipment and instruments associated with patient examination, observation of examination techniques in various specialty clinics. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring the basic skills and knowledge needed to begin patient examination.

OMT3140 Clinical Application-ll 5 cr.
Instruction on examination procedures and techniques, development of clinical skills and supervised accomplishment of several ophthalmic tasks.
Prerequisite: OMT3130.

OMT3210 Introduction to Ophthalmic Technology: Basic Skills-l (4,0,0) 4 cr.
Basic skills needed for an ophthalmic medical technologist including history taking, visual assessment, stereopsis, depth perception, lensometry, tonometry, pachymetry, auto-refractometry and slit lamp techniques. Overview of basic medical knowledge and terminology, systemic illnesses and cardiopulmonary resuscitation will also be covered as well as all aspects of ophthalmic surgical assisting.

Introduction to contact lenses including types, fitting procedures and techniques, case and storage procedures, indications for use, patient instruction, complication and therapeutic uses.

OMT4111 Ocular Motility-ll 1 cr.
Topics include advanced motility problems, the diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia, comitant and incomitant deviations, Bielschowsky head tilt test, 3-step test, A & V patterns and head posture.
Prerequisite: OMT3119.

OMT4112 Ophthalmic Photography-ll (0.5,0,0.5) 1 cr.
Topics include slit-lamp and color fundus digital and film photography, equipment and procedures, fluorescein angiography and ICG basis and procedures as well as interpretation of various retinal findings. Students will receive lectures and hands-on training in fluorescein angiography, ICG, fundus, external and slit lamp photography.
Prerequisite: OMT3114.

Ophthalmic medications, basics of mechanism of action, indications for use, dosage, sites of action, side effects, proper instillation techniques abbreviations used with emphasis on glaucoma drug therapies.

OMT4114 Basic Ophthalmic Science Seminars (2,0,0) 2 cr.
Complete ophthalmology lecture series detailing the anatomy and physiology of the eye, ocular diseases and disorders encompassing both the more common conditions to the more complicated cases, proper intervention and management techniques.

OMT4115 Electrodiagnostics (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Electroretinogram (ERG), electro-oculogram (EOG), and the visually evoked cortical potential (VEP) including clinical use, components, recording procedures and measurements. This course will also examine the anatomy of the photosensitive pigments, bleaching process, photo-regeneration and light and dark adaptation.

OMT4117 Low Vision (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Examination procedures of the low vision patient, including special equipment and techniques. Other topics include blindness, subnormal vision and optical principles of magnification.

OMT4118 Advanced Perimetry (1,0,0) 1 cr.
Advanced techniques for manual and automated perimetry with various types of perimeters. Static and kinetic perimetry, exploration of visual defects, quantification of scotomas, depression as well as interpretation of visual field patterns.

OMT4119 Common Ocular Complaints (2,0,0) 2 cr.
Pathological condition of the eye such as inflammation, infection, degeneration, congenital, acquired, traumatic, infective and degenerative disease of the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea and lacrimal apparatus. This course will also cover the management of ocular emergencies from proper triage of patients to immediate intervention, long term complication and preventative measures.

Common and exotic eye disorders and diseases including recognition pattern, special testing and methods of treatment.

OMT4130 Clinical Application-lll 7 cr.
Continuation of the previous clinical experiences completed in year-3. Students will be given more autonomy in patient care. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring more specialized testing skills and techniques.
Prerequisite: OMT3140.

OMT4140 Clinical Application-lV 8 cr.
Final course in ophthalmic patient care experiences. The student will be required to perform at a high level of competence in all phases of ophthalmic technology as they are expected to function as a full member of the health team in all clinical areas.
Prerequisite: OMT4130.

OMT4210 Introduction to Ophthalmic Technology: Basic Skills-ll (3,0,0) 3 cr.
Evaluation of pupil function, specular microscopy and cell analysis, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, advanced slit lamp examination techniques and the basics of ophthalmic equipment maintenance. Other topics include properties and clinical uses of various lasers used in ophthalmology with emphasis on the technical operations of the excimer laser for refractive and therapeutic surgeries.
Prerequisite: OMT3210.
