Welcoming Remarks
Jacques Frémont was appointed President and Vice‐Chancellor of the University of Ottawa in 2016 and his mandate was renewed in 2021. Prior to this, he was chair of Quebec’s Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission, and director of the International Higher Education Support Program at Open Society Foundations in New York. He also served at the University of Montreal in various roles including provost and vice‐rector (academic affairs), and dean and professor (Faculty of Law). Mr. Frémont has advised international organizations on issues of human rights, good governance and democracy, and directed several important international cooperation projects in the fields of human rights and judicial training.

Dawn Smyth (BSc ’04 in Human Kinetics; Gee Gees Women’s Basketball assistant coach ’03-’04) is a trailblazing figure in the global basketball arena, currently serving as the team leader for international basketball development at the National Basketball Association. Her remarkable journey began in the fall of 2019, when she assumed the pivotal role of guiding Basketball Operations strategy in the NBA’s 15 international offices, shaping the future of the game for millions of basketball enthusiasts around the world.
