As part of uOttawa’s Black History Month celebrations, the uOttawa Alumni Engagement Office is proud to spotlight alumni-owned or community-adjacent businesses making an impact.

Meet Dominique Bower, founder of SlamScience.

Q: Can you tell us about Slam Science?

A: Science has the power to inspire, transform, and open doors to endless possibilities. As a geoscientist, I’m passionate about helping people understand our big, beautiful world through a scientific lens. That’s why I created Slam Science—a business dedicated to delivering hands-on, interactive workshops to curious minds. Whether it’s a birthday party, a classroom session, or a community event, Slam Science helps create memorable experiences by experimenting with fun.

Q: What inspired you to start Slam Science?

A: My passion for science communication has always driven me, but a pivotal moment came when I was selected for the Let’s Talk Science national award for my work in geoscience content development. That recognition showed me that I could make a real difference in how people learn, reinforcing my belief that science should be engaging, accessible, and fun. As Katherine Johnson once said, “Like what you do, and then you will do your best.” That mindset planted the seed for Slam Science.

Q: How did your experience at uOttawa shape your entrepreneurial journey?

A: My time at uOttawa taught me the power of curiosity and perseverance. It’s where I developed the critical thinking skills and scientific foundation that now drive my business. More importantly, I learned that innovation isn’t just about what we know—it’s about how we apply it to create real impact. The support from the alumni office, along with lifetime access to digital journals, has been instrumental in my journey, providing me with resources to keep learning and evolving.

A: I see Slam Science becoming the go-to for hands-on STEM experiences for kids, parents, and educators. I want to build a community that makes science feel approachable, exciting, and limitless. I’m also focused on expanding my science communication work, using digital platforms to make complex geoscience topics more accessible to a wider audience.
