Many uOttawa students from all over the world have enjoyed Canadian cultural traditions and companionship at the dinners, which are offered at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
Moni Zavi, a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Arts, first attended a Thanksgiving dinner through the program in 2021. Originally from the Middle East, she has remained close friends with the host family ever since, attending church services, going on hikes and celebrating her national holidays.
“This initiative provided a unique opportunity to experience Canadian culture in a warm and welcoming environment. It was my first time celebrating a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving, and I appreciated the chance to immerse myself in the culture first hand,” Moni says. “The family also invited me to Sunday services at Chapel Ridge in Kanata, which allowed me to learn about the Christian traditions and practices that are a significant part of Canada’s cultural and historical fabric. As they shared their story and beliefs with me, they also took the time to listen to my cultural background, creating a mutual exchange of ideas and experiences.”
Steven Adekambi, a second-year master’s student in education from Benin, says he first participated weeks after arriving in Canada in 2023.
“I was placed with one of the nice host families in Ottawa who knew my country pretty well, as they had lived there for many years,” Steven says. “It was a great evening with other international students from other countries.
“We told jokes, stories, we laughed a lot, and we shared delicious food. I think this kind of initiative brings a lot of positivity for students who are new to Canada.”

“This program has facilitated meaningful connections that have greatly enriched my experience in Canada,” Moni adds. “I highly recommend the Friends for Dinner program, especially for newcomers to Canada. Nearly three years later, I am still grateful for the connections and experiences this program has provided.”
Although Friends for Dinner is supported by a network of volunteers from churches and Christian ministries, the dinners are not used to convert anyone or convince them to alter their beliefs. The program has expanded to other cities across Canada.
