Every year, we welcome hundreds of foreign students through exchange programs. We’d be pleased to have you join us for one or two terms while you remain enrolled at your home university. To be eligible, your institution must have signed an agreement with uOttawa.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Steps to follow
Before you begin
You must be nominated by your own international relations office to go on an exchange.
The Telfer School of Management and the Faculty of Medicine have established restricted bilateral agreements with specific partner institutions abroad and administer their own exchange programs. If you wish to participate in an exchange with either one, contact it directly.
Explore your study options
You can enroll in courses in different disciplines. See the course timetable. However, courses in the following faculties aren’t open to visiting international students (students whose home university doesn’t have a partnership agreement with uOttawa):
- Telfer School of Management
- Faculty of Education (undergraduate)
- Faculty of Medicine
Faculties may also restrict access to certain courses. See “Course access restrictions” under Step 2.
Participation period
- One term: Fall (September to December) or Winter (January to April)
- Two terms: September to April (regular academic year)
Internships while on exchange
You can’t do an internship during your stay at uOttawa while participating in the exchange program.
Scholarship opportunities for non-Canadians
Through Global Affairs Canada, the government of Canada provides scholarships to foreign students to help them fund short-term study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions. The University of Ottawa participates in the following two scholarship programs:
- Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).
- Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED). (The call for applications for the 2025-2026 cycle will be announced shortly.)
How to apply
The application process for Global Affairs Canada scholarships varies depending on whether the student wants to attend the University of Ottawa to take academic courses or to conduct research.
Scholarships for study
Students who want to take academic courses at the University of Ottawa must also apply for the University’s Incoming Exchange program by March 31, 2025.
The course-based exchange program is only available to students from our partner institutions.
Admission to the University of Ottawa as an exchange student and application for the study scholarship student are two separate processes and must be applied for separately, before the respective deadlines.
Submit scholarship application documents to the Student Mobility team at: [email protected].
Scholarships for research
Students who wish to conduct research at the University of Ottawa must first obtain a letter of invitation from a supervisor at uOttawa. All application documents should then be sent to the supervisor's designated Faculty contact.
We recommend that potential student researchers use the following resources to find possible supervisors:
- List of University of Ottawa research centres, including affiliated hospitals and institutes and its clusters of research interests.
- Faculty-based research offices.
