Anti-Racism in Europe. Public policies and social movements

More than 20 years after the adoption of the EU Race Equality Directive of 2000, policy and public debates on anti-discrimination and anti-racism in Europe have changed. During this lecture, we will discuss the interplay between increasing contestation of the existing EU and member states policies, and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 as contributing factors leading up to the passing of the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan in 2020.

Ilke Adam is an Associate Professor in Political Science. She is the co-director of the Research Centre for Migration, Diversity and Justice at the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Together with Florian Trauner, she also coordinates the Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) at VUB, which unites over 100 researchers from 12 disciplines. She graduated in law (Universities of Leuven and Barcelona) and political science (Institut d’Etudes Politiques, Université Aix-Marseille III & Université Libre de Bruxelles PhD).
Her research interests include immigration, immigrant integration, anti-racism and anti-discrimination policies, with a particular focus on the multi-level governance of these policies. She studies local, regional, national and European policies, as well as the interactions between governance levels. Beyond research on public policies, Adam's research interests extend to the study of multiculturalism, citizenship, sub-state nationalism, anti-racist activism and ethno-racial inequalities in higher education.
Ilke Adam is currently a consortium partner in two Horizon 2020 projects: BRIDGES on the production and impact of migration narratives (with a focus on West-Africa) and WHOLE-COM on integration policies for post-2015 migrants in small and medium-sized towns (focus on Belgium). She presently also conducts research and prepares publications on anti-racist activism in Europe and EU-Africa relations on migration.
