Biographie

Chercheur reconnu internationalement pour ses travaux sur les traumatismes crâniens, Blaine Hoshizaki est le directeur du Laboratoire de neurotraumatologie de l’impact de l’Université d’Ottawa. 

Fort d’une expérience de 25 ans dans l’étude des liens entre impact physique et incidences et dommages neurologiques, le professeur Hoshizaki possède à son actif 171 publications à comité de lecture, plus de 290 conférences et 22 brevets de produits. Ayant mis à profit ses découvertes dans le développement de produits en tant que vice-président des entreprises CCM Hockey et Bauer Hockey et comme consultant pour les Canadiens de Montréal et les Rangers de New York, il est entré en 2011 au palmarès du Globe and Mail des 50 personnes les plus influentes dans le monde du sport. 

Invité aux audiences du comité sénatorial américain Concussion and the Marketing of Sports Equipment (112e congrès), il y a été présenté comme « un ingénieur en biomécanique et chercheur hors pair à l’origine d’excellents travaux sur les performances des casques et la compréhension des blessures crâniennes ».  

Ses équipes de conception technique ont conçu des casques pour une multitude de sports, du hockey sur glace au football, en passant par l’équitation et la crosse ainsi que le vélo, la motoneige et la moto. Le professeur Hoshizaki a par ailleurs siégé à la présidence du Comité ISO de normalisation pour la certification de l’équipement de hockey sur glace, et fait partie de plusieurs organismes tels que le NOCSAE et l’ASTM aux États-Unis, ainsi que l’Association canadienne de normalisation. 

Ses 25 ans d’expérience dans la recherche neurotraumatologique et le développement commercial lui font entrevoir de réelles possibilités pour une réduction globale des risques liés aux chocs, grâce à un suivi et un traitement précis et accessibles du traumatisme crânien.

Le professeur Hoshizaki accepte de nouveaux étudiants pour la supervision de thèse.

Laboratoire de science de l'impact des neurotraumatismes 

Vision : Les blessures à la tête et au cerveau deviendront un élément rare et sans importance des activités sportives et de loisirs.

Mission : Entreprendre des recherches qui contribuent de manière significative à la diminution de tous les types de traumatismes crâniens dans le sport.

  1. Entreprendre des recherches pour mieux comprendre la relation entre les traumatismes crâniens et les lésions cérébrales.
  2. Entreprendre des recherches qui permettent de comprendre comment se produisent les traumatismes crâniens afin de soutenir les programmes éducatifs visant à diminuer les blessures dans le sport.
  3. Entreprendre des recherches visant à améliorer l'efficacité des stratégies de prévention des lésions cérébrales.
