The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI), located in the Faculty of Arts, is seeking internal applications from regular, full-time, tenured faculty at the University of Ottawa at the Associate or Full Professor level for a new research chair in Bilingualism:
- Research Chair in “Language Assessment Literacy”. Research is vital part of OLBI’s language testing sector. The research chair will aim to advance knowledge associated with the development of language assessment skills. There is a growing interest in the development, implementation, and interpretation of language assessment tools whether for determining learner proficiency levels, field assessment, or training of assessors. The Chair will provide expertise that can serve a wide range of stakeholders—teachers, students, language test developers, and researchers, as well as those individuals whose decisions are based on language assessment tools. OLBI is particularly well placed to be an innovative and dynamic force in this area.
OLBI was created in 2007 to promote excellence and innovation in the fields of bilingualism and language acquisition. It is expected that through their research program and activities, the incumbent will help achieve OLBI’s mission by (a) actively soliciting external research funds, including team grants where appropriate. (b) fostering the development of research activity through collaboration with OLBI faculty, as well as the creation of dedicated interdisciplinary research groups, and (3) actively participating in the dissemination of knowledge under the auspices of OLBI.
The chairholder will assume a leadership role and contribute to capacity building at OLBI. Successful candidates will have a strong research agenda, a proven record of commitment to graduate studies and teaching, and an ability to work collaboratively.
The Chair will receive $25,000 per year in funding for research activities from OLBI and one 3-credit course release, the cost of which will be covered by the chairholder’s home faculty. The Chair is tenable for 5 years and renewable subject to available funding.
Applicants are invited to submit an application in PDF format that includes their curriculum vitae (OCGS format), a detailed five-year research proposal of a maximum of five pages (including plans for networking and collaboration with OLBI, the names of three expert referees (who have not collaborated with the candidate) who will be asked to evaluate the research proposal, and a letter of support from the Dean of their home Faculty, which makes direct reference to the agreement to cover the cost of the 3-credit course release.
